Different types of waistlines for wedding dresses

Many people think that waistline does not matter when selecting wedding dress. Some might think that they are there only to separate the upper part of the dress from the lower part. However, ‘waistline’ can make a big difference. Different type of waistline can accentuate different body shape. Nowadays, waistline can vary from below the bust to below the hips. So, let’s see which type of waistline will make you look perfect!

Basque Waist

Basque waist is similar to natural waist, except that it features a low V shape in the front. This waistline is usually very fitted and can commonly be found in structured ball gowns dresses. It is a very versatile style and looks good on many. The ‘V’ waistline creates a slimming effect and an impression of height. It does so by reducing the width of the waist and hips and elongating the torso.

 Image

This type of waistline will look great on those who has hourglass figure and pear shaped figure with a slightly short waist. On the other hand, those who are petite and those with square figures should avoid selecting this type of waistline. Also, it is not recommended for those who are still puffy in the front after wearing shapewear as it has a tendency to draw attention to the lower belly.

Empire Waist

Empire waistline usually just sits below the bust line, with the skirt flows down loosely from there. It gives a long and slender look. This style is very popular among the pregnant ladies.

 Image

This style works great on those who has a fuller figure, wide hips and thick waist as it helps to camouflage lower body flaws and draw attention upward. Thus, it is also a good option for those who are small-chested. This is the perfect style for petite brides because it gives the illusion of big breast, small waist and taller height. Those who have a larger chest are recommended to stay away from this style as it has a tendency to draw attention to the bust (you want look perfect on your big day, not your bust spilling out of the dress!).

Princess Waist

This type of waistline does its shaping by joining edges of different curvature. The seam usually follows one’s curves along the sides of the bodice, to the waist and then flares at the hip. It is usually found in A-line silhouette dresses. It creates a long and slimming look.

 Image

This type of style is super-flattering on most body types. If you have no idea which style to go for, this will be your best option.

 Image

Dropped Waist

Dropped waist is a style of waistline that falls several inches below the natural waistline. It creates an impression of height by lengthening the torso. This style looks best with mermaid style dresses.

 Image

This type of waistline is perfect for those who are full figured, short-waisted and wide-hipped as it pull in the hips and elongates the waist. Thus, those who are extremely long-waisted and extremely petite should avoid this waistline. It is also recommended for those who have a very slim figure because it creates the illusion of an hour-glass figure. Additionally, this style is great for those who have an hour glass figure or larger breasts and those has short torso.

 Image

Natural Waist

This type of waistline sits at the narrowest part of the body between the ribs and the hips. This waistline is the most common waistline and works with most body type.

 Image

Natural waist is perfect for those who have a natural hourglass figure or those who have a slim waist as it emphasizes the natural hourglass figure. It is also great for pear shaped figure ladies. However, this type of waistline will create a shorter height illusion as it kinds of visually dividing the figure in half. Moreover, those who are apple-shape (larger in the middle) should avoid this waistline as it will make your waist look wider.

Image

Asymmetrical Waistline

Asymmetrical waistline is a waistline that runs across the body diagonally. It either starts on one side at empire waist (natural waist) and falls diagonally to a natural waist (dropped waist). This style can be very flattering on a variety of body type if done correctly.

 Image

This type of waistline will create a slimming effect. Thus, it is great for those full figured or thick-waisted ladies. On the other hand, those on the shorter side should stay away from this waistline as the long waist will make the rest of the body appear shorter.

Japanese yukata

Image

Japanese yukata is traditional Japanese clothing. The name “yukata” comes from the word “yu (bath)” and “katabira (under-clothing)”. It is usually made of cotton or synthetic fabric. They can be worn by both sexes. Unlike kimono, yukata is lighter and more comfortable to wear. It is also more casual and is not suitable for formal events.

Image

Traditionally, yukata is worn when bathing outdoor to cover up the bodies and to soak up sweat. Today, yukata is usually worn during the hot summer months, festival celebrations and at Japanese inns after bathing. The modern yukata are available in a wide variety of colours and designs. Yukata worn by men are usually just plain colours or with stripes, whereas, ladies’ yukata comes in various designs, such as flowers and paintings, and in various colours.

Wedding Dress Necklines Guide

Ladies, don’t forget about the dress neckline when choosing your wedding dress for your big day!

The neckline plays an important part of the dress, it can make or break your overall look. When choosing the right style of neckline, you should take the following points into consideration:

a)      Your body shape

b)      Size of your bust

c)      Jewellery/necklace that you would like to wear

d)     The style of your hair

Below are some of the most common necklines that you will see on wedding dresses:

a)        V-neck

The neckline dips down in a V-shape on the front. This type of neckline flatters many body types. It can be a very modest, subtle “V” to a sexy, plunging “V”. It depends on how revealing you want your dress to be. Sometimes, you can choose a dress that has a “V” back to highlight your backside.

This V-neck is ideal for those who have a fuller figure or hour glass shape. This is because the shape of the neckline can highlight your cleavage and shows your curves. On the other hand, a low cut or wide set “V” can create a fuller bust illusion for those with smaller breast size. V-neck is very flexible as it can be paired with any sleeve length, from spaghetti straps to long sleeves.

b)        Square neck

As the name suggest, this type of neckline is shaped like a half square. It has a straight horizontal bodice with straps.

Square neck is ideal for those who would like a modest display of cleavage, especially those who are well endowed. Overall, it create a sophisticated look and  is suitable for almost every body shape. It can be paired with spaghetti straps to long sleeves.

c)        Scoop neck

Scoop neck is a U-shaped neckline. It’s suitable for every body shape. Like V-neck, the scoop can be a modest neckline or a sexy plunging neckline. It can be paired with any sleeves length, depending on your choice. This is the style to go for if you have no idea which neckline looks good on you.

 ImageImage

d)       One shoulder/asymmetric

This type of neckline features a single strap coming across the front. The sleeve varies from sleeveless to long sleeve. You can also add flowers or ruffling to the strap to direct attention.

Asymmetric neckline can be used to emphasize your collarbone. It should be avoided if you have broad shoulders.

ImageImage

e)        Off-the-shoulder

This style sits below the shoulders to highlight your collarbone and shoulders, with sleeves that cover part of the upper arm. A variation on this neckline is known as portrait, which has a wide, soft scoop from the tip of one shoulder to the other.

This type of neckline generally looks good on all body types, especially those who are well-endowed or possess a pear shaped body. Those with broad shoulders or fuller arms should avoid choosing this type of neckline as it will accentuate them further.

ImageImage

f)         Sweetheart

Sweetheart neckline is shaped like the top half of a heart. It is most commonly paired with strapless dresses, but can be found on dresses with a variety of sleeve lengths as well.

It is ideal for those with a large bust line as it helps to accentuate the décolletage by creating support and control exposure. However, those who struggle with a décolletage should not choose this option.

g)        Bateau/Boat neck

This wide top neckline follows the curve of the collarbone. It has a relatively straight neckline and has the same depth in the front and back. It can be paired with sleeveless to dresses with a variety of sleeve lengths.

Bateau neck is ideal for bony and flat-chested brides as it boosts the bust. Contrary, busty brides should avoid choosing this type of neckline.

ImageImage

h)        Halter neck

This neckline features straps that wrap around the back of the neck. It is very flexible, it can be paired with square neckline or V-neck.

Halter neck looks good on taller women and those with broad shoulders. It is also ideal for brides that have well-toned upper arms as this style will draw attention to the neck and shoulders. Contrary, those with narrow shoulders and have very large chest should avoid choosing this option.

 ImageImage

i)          Jewel/high neck

This type of neckline follows the curvature of the neck. Also, it will create a formal and classic look. Jewel neckline comes in many variations, such as cut out, keyhole or an illusion high collar this neckline can be paired with a variety of sleeve lengths.

It works well for small-chested woman as it enhances the chest area and makes you look bustier. Thus, those well-endowed should avoid choosing this type of neckline.

ImageImage

j)          Strapless

This type of neckline features a bodice without the support of straps or sleeves. It comes with a variation of designs, such as cut straight across, with a notch, side peaks or slightly curved.

Strapless neckline is suitable for those with great shoulders and collarbones and have well-toned arms. Also, it is a popular choice among the busty brides. Contrary, small chested women should avoid choosing this option.

Different types of wedding dress styles

One of the most important things to do for your wedding is to choose the perfect wedding dress. The ‘dress’ is the top topic among the ladies and maybe some gentlemen who attend the wedding. The first impression that wedding guests have on the bride is the dress and her overall look. Thus, choosing the right style can accentuate your best assets and help you to create your dream bridal look.

There are 5 basic wedding dresses silhouette.

1)      A-line/Princess

This is the most popular classic wedding dress style. This style is fitted around the bodice and flows out to the ground. Thus, resembles an uppercase letter “A”. Its length can range from mini length to the traditional full train cathedral length. This style of dress can support many different fabric choices, from free flowing silks to satin.

This is the most versatile dress style If you have no idea which style to go for, this is the safest bet. The long lines of the dress can create illusion of height on shorter body and slim down a rounded figure. Also, the full skirt can hide a rounder lower body or create the illusion of curve on a slimmer frame.

2)      Ball Gown

This is the best option to go for if you are looking for the fairy tales look. This style is fitted around the bodice with a full skirt. Thus, it is best for the big, formal and traditional wedding. For a dramatic look, wear it with a pair of opera length gloves and chapel train. Usually, fabrics like satin and chiffon is used on the top with intricate beadings and embroidery, while the bottom is made from layers of tulle or organza for the floating effect.

The cut of the dress is ideal for those who are slender or have a pear-shaped figure as the full skirt can accentuate the waist and hide the lower body. If you have a large bust, this style will help you to create the hourglass look. However, if you are on the shorter side, this is not a good option for you as you might be overpowered by the size of the full skirt.

3)      Empire

The empire dress has a raised waistline that sits just below the bust and a flowing skirt. This type of dress is usually made from lighter fabric such as chiffon to create the romantic feel. This silhouette is very versatile and can accommodate a wide range of formality.

Like the A-line dress, the empire dress works well for most body types. The style of the dress is ideal for those who want to enhance their busts and those who want to cover up their larger breasts. Additionally, this silhouette is ideal for those who has a pear shaped figure and pregnant brides.

4)      Sheath/column

This type of dress has a slim shape that follows from the neckline to the hem. Mixing various neckline, sleeve lengths and train lengths will give the dress a different look. Moreover, using different type of fabrics can make this dress either a simple slip dress or a highly constructed dramatic statement.

This style of dress tends to hug the body and will show all your curves. Thus, it is best suited for those who are lean. Also, it is a good option for those who are on the short side as the elongating nature will help you to look taller. However, these type of dresses are very tight and will restrict you movement.

ImageImage

5)      Mermaid

This is the sexiest of all the styles. Wearing this type of dress will highlight your curve. The style of the dress is contoured against the body and flows out from around the knee. It comes with various versions, from jewel neck to trumpet flare and even flamenco flare.

The mermaid cut style is not suitable for everyone. It is best suited for those who have a slender figure, either tall or short. Also, this type of dress is best worn by those who are confident and love to show their curve.
